There’s nothing like six or more inches of snow to give you a hankering for a treat from your childhood. Here in the mountains a big snow provides an easy way to make an iced cream treat that is as good as it is cold.
Snow Cream
Snow cream is simply made given you trust the snow to be clean enough to consume. The way I make it, all of the ingredients are estimated. The important know how is the concept I suppose, then you can make it to your liking.
Start with melting a sweetener of your choice into some heavy cream or whole milk. (You can also use low fat milk, but I don’t think it would taste near as good or be very nutritious for you. Treats should not be empty calories in my opinion, so go for the gusto!) The sweetener we use is honey and/or maple syrup. (We use only unrefined/moderately refined sweeteners that hold plenty of nutrients such as iron or enzymes.) Since our sweetener is already liquid it doesn’t require a lot of heat to completely mix with the milk. Allow the milk mix to cool, and add a little vanilla… or a lot if you are like me and love strong flavors. Next, gather your snow in a large stainless steel bowl or pot. You will want to compact it a bit and gather a large amount. Scoop from the top layer of snow only, being careful to not dig down too close to the ground. At least 4 inches should be on the ground for making snow cream. I was always told not to eat the first snow of the year as well. Once back inside, slowly mix the milk soup into the snow stirring thoroughly, but with a gentle touch. Keep mixing until it is to your desired consistency, then eat and enjoy! The Haywoods certainly enjoyed their snow cream this year.
Or, you can do like I did as a kid wanting snow cream. Take your favorite pancake syrup and a spoon outside, squeeze some into the snow, and chow down. 🙂

Kelli: What a beautiful batch of snow cream. The picture was so vivid I could almost taste its creamy goodness. Brings back lots of memories for your old granny. My Dad was the one who could put that extra touch to our treat. When I had children they were introduced to this treat and it does my heart good to see you making sure Deladis and Ivy enjoy it also. People who do not know or have not tasted this winter speciality are missing out on one of life’s great surprises, do you agree?

It is and it is good. What did your Daddy do to make it even better? I’d love to know.

My kids love eating some maple syrup drizzled on snow, just like Laura, in Little House in the Big Woods. This sounds delicious!

I had completely forgotten about this! We made this once or twice when I was a kid too. I think we got a recipe out of a kid’s craft book or something. It’s supposed to snow here over the next few days, so I may have to make some of this to share with my boyfriend. 🙂

I just blogged about snow cream as well! (You were featured on the front wordpress login page!) I love the stuff and hadn’t had it since I was a kid. We’re expecting a ton more snow this weekend, too, so I’ll have to chance to make more (unfortunately). It’s one of those things that shouldn’t taste as good as it does – and it’s darn good!
By the way, you can eat the first snow! The “pollutants” in the air will always be there – the snow does nothing to clean them out 🙂 A little info here, though it hasn’t “officially” been snopesized: http://message.snopes.com/showthread.php?t=1879

Thanks, Jennah! It is darn good. 🙂 I figured that about the first snow. We’ve been melting snow to use for water here and there and I noticed how cloudy it was after melted. Oops. hehe I told my husband that maybe we shouldn’t have eaten so much, but… all’s well. I’m sure its nothing we haven’t encountered before. A little dirt never hurt. 😉

Snowcream always makes me think of my Mamaw-I remember her making it for me and my brother-and telling us never use the first snow of the year but wait for the second snowfall. I also remember making it at home and all of us sitting in front of the heater to eat it! I’m glad you’re carrying it on with your sweet girls too : )

Here in the Ozarks we always used fresh eggs as well as the cream from our cow and sugar and vanilla. At age 71 (on Friday) I still creep out on the deck and make a bit for myself when we have seven or eight inches as we have received the past week. It still tastes just as good as it did when I was four and five years old and had to share with the siblings.
BTW, from one writer to another, great website!

Thank you! I actually saw a recipe using eggs the other day. It made me want to try it. The consistency would probably end up smoother. YUM!

When I was little, my mother made snow cream using fresh eggs and milk. But I have found that sweetened condensed milk and fresh snow are all I need to make delicious snow cream. Just mix in condensed milk to taste—-good stuff and the whole family approves!
